Its capacity to process information, recognise complex patterns, support decision-making and increasingly collaborate with human intelligence has prompted profound questions about the future of civilisation. Among these questions is whether AI can become a force for peace.
This assessment examines Artificial Intelligence through the lens of Unified Peace Theory (UPT). Rather than evaluating AI solely as a technological innovation or a source of ethical risk, the assessment considers its influence on the coherence of human systems. The central question is not whether AI is inherently good or bad, but how it affects humanity’s long-term movement towards peace.
Within Peace As A Science, peace is understood not as the absence of conflict, nor as a moral aspiration, but as the natural attractor state of coherent systems. Fragmentation is inherently unstable and ultimately self-limiting, while coherence demonstrates increasing resilience, adaptability and persistence over time. From this perspective, AI does not determine whether peace is possible. Instead, it influences the speed, pathway and stability through which humanity moves towards its inevitable trajectory of increasing coherence.
This assessment therefore explores AI not as an independent actor but as an emerging component of humanity’s evolving peace infrastructure.
Assessment Overview
Artificial Intelligence is often presented as either humanity’s greatest opportunity or its greatest existential threat. This assessment concludes that both positions are incomplete. AI is neither the creator of peace nor the inevitable cause of conflict. Rather, it functions as a powerful amplifier of the coherence or fragmentation already present within the human systems that design, govern and apply it.
Unlike previous technological revolutions, AI increasingly participates in interpretation rather than simply execution. It assists humanity in recognising patterns, modelling complex systems, generating knowledge, supporting decision-making and coordinating activity across scales previously beyond human capability. These capacities position AI as one of the most significant coherence multipliers ever developed.
From the perspective of Unified Peace Theory, however, AI should not be assessed solely by the risks it introduces. Greater importance lies in understanding how AI interacts with the underlying dynamics of human evolution. Because coherent systems are inherently more stable than fragmented ones, peace represents the long-term trajectory of civilisation rather than merely one possible outcome. AI therefore cannot prevent the emergence of peace. It can, however, accelerate periods of fragmentation, delay adaptive learning, or alternatively assist humanity in recognising fragmentation earlier and repairing it more effectively.
The assessment finds that AI possesses extraordinary capacity to strengthen healthcare, education, scientific discovery, governance, environmental stewardship, conflict prevention and collective intelligence. At the same time, it can amplify misinformation, surveillance, inequality, autonomous warfare, economic disruption and social polarisation when embedded within fragmented institutions.
The determining variable is therefore not Artificial Intelligence itself but the coherence of the human systems within which it operates. As humanity develops greater collective coherence, AI is likely to become an increasingly powerful instrument for accelerating peace. As long as fragmentation persists, AI will continue to amplify both humanity’s greatest strengths and its deepest unresolved divisions.
From a peace science perspective, Artificial Intelligence represents neither humanity’s salvation nor its downfall. It represents one of the greatest evolutionary catalysts yet encountered—one capable of accelerating the emergence of a more coherent civilisation while simultaneously exposing the fragmentation that must first be transformed.
Context
Artificial Intelligence has rapidly evolved from specialised computational systems into technologies capable of language generation, scientific reasoning, autonomous learning, complex prediction and collaborative problem solving. Increasingly, AI is becoming embedded within the everyday operation of governments, businesses, education, healthcare, communications, scientific research and defence. Few technologies have spread so rapidly or possess such broad transformative potential.
Much of the contemporary discussion surrounding AI focuses on ethics, safety, employment, regulation or existential risk. While these are important considerations, they often treat AI as an isolated technological phenomenon. Such approaches frequently overlook the wider human systems that shape both the development and application of AI.
From a peace science perspective, Artificial Intelligence cannot be understood independently of the civilisation that creates it. Every AI system reflects human choices, human values, human assumptions and human interpretations. It therefore acts less as an independent intelligence and more as an extension of humanity’s existing coherence or fragmentation.
This distinction is critical.
Throughout history, technologies have rarely created entirely new human behaviours. More commonly, they have amplified behaviours already present within society. The printing press amplified knowledge. Industrialisation amplified production. The internet amplified communication. Artificial Intelligence differs because it increasingly amplifies interpretation itself. It assists humanity in understanding, predicting and responding to increasingly complex realities.
Consequently, AI occupies a unique position within human evolution. Rather than replacing human intelligence, it expands humanity’s capacity to perceive patterns that previously remained hidden. This capability has profound implications for peace. If peace emerges through increasing coherence across individuals, institutions and societies, then technologies capable of improving humanity’s ability to recognise fragmentation may themselves become essential components of future peace infrastructure.
At the same time, AI also amplifies fragmentation wherever fragmentation already exists. Biased data produce biased systems. Polarised societies generate polarised algorithms. Competitive geopolitical environments encourage competitive AI development. Fragmented governance produces fragmented technological outcomes. AI therefore reflects the coherence of the civilisation from which it emerges rather than operating independently of it.
The central question is therefore not whether Artificial Intelligence will create peace.
The more fundamental question is whether humanity will develop sufficient coherence to guide Artificial Intelligence towards accelerating the peaceful trajectory that already exists within the deeper dynamics of human evolution.

3D — Physical Conditions and Consequences
Artificial Intelligence is already reshaping the physical infrastructure of civilisation. Its influence extends across healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, communications, education, finance, scientific research, energy management, environmental monitoring and national security. Few technologies have become integrated into so many sectors in such a short period of time.
At the physical level, AI has demonstrated remarkable capacity to improve human wellbeing. Machine learning systems assist clinicians in identifying diseases earlier, support researchers in accelerating medical discoveries, optimise food production, reduce waste through more efficient resource management and improve disaster forecasting and emergency response. These developments have the potential to reduce suffering, preserve life and strengthen the resilience of communities. As a consequence, AI can become an important contributor to the physical foundations upon which peaceful societies depend.
At the same time, AI introduces new physical vulnerabilities. Large-scale automation is transforming labour markets faster than many economies can adapt, creating uncertainty for workers and institutions alike. The concentration of computational infrastructure within relatively few organisations raises questions of economic sovereignty and resilience. Increasing energy demands associated with advanced AI systems place additional pressure on environmental resources. More significantly, the application of AI to cyber warfare, autonomous weapons, surveillance technologies and critical infrastructure introduces new forms of physical risk capable of affecting societies at unprecedented speed and scale.
These apparently contradictory developments are not evidence that AI is simultaneously peaceful and dangerous. Rather, they demonstrate that AI amplifies the physical consequences of the systems within which it operates. Where institutions are coherent, transparent and oriented towards human wellbeing, AI strengthens physical resilience. Where institutions are fragmented by conflict, exploitation or short-term competition, the same technological capabilities may increase instability.
From a peace science perspective, the physical effects of AI should therefore be understood as expressions of the underlying coherence of the human systems directing its development rather than properties of the technology itself.
4D — Time and Historical Trajectory
Artificial Intelligence represents the latest stage in humanity’s long evolution of extending its capabilities through technology. Throughout history, innovations have progressively amplified human capacity: tools extended physical strength, writing extended memory, printing extended knowledge, industrialisation extended production and digital networks extended communication. AI extends something more fundamental—the capacity to interpret complexity.
This places AI at a unique point within human history. Unlike earlier technologies that primarily amplified action, AI increasingly amplifies understanding. It identifies relationships that remain invisible to unaided human cognition, models future scenarios, detects emerging patterns and assists decision-makers in navigating increasingly complex systems. In doing so, AI has the potential to increase humanity’s collective capacity to learn from its own history rather than repeatedly reproducing it.
Historical development also reveals an important pattern. Technological innovation consistently evolves more rapidly than social institutions, legal systems and cultural adaptation. This creates transitional periods during which fragmentation temporarily increases as societies struggle to integrate new capabilities into existing structures. AI appears to be following this familiar trajectory. Regulatory frameworks, educational systems and governance models are still adapting to technological developments that continue to accelerate.
Within Unified Peace Theory, however, history is not viewed as a random sequence of events but as an evolutionary movement towards increasing coherence. Conflict, disruption and institutional instability are understood as transitional expressions of fragmentation rather than permanent conditions. AI therefore enters history not as a force capable of changing humanity’s destination, but as a technology capable of altering the speed and complexity of the journey.
Artificial Intelligence may accelerate periods of disruption as existing systems become inadequate. 5D — Relationships, Identity and Belonging
Artificial Intelligence is transforming not only how people work but also how they relate to themselves, one another and society. Increasingly, AI participates in education, healthcare, communication, companionship, creative expression and decision-making. As these interactions deepen, AI begins influencing the relational fabric upon which peaceful societies depend.
One of AI’s greatest opportunities lies in its capacity to strengthen connection. Language translation enables communication across cultures. Educational systems can become increasingly personalised and accessible. Healthcare may become more responsive to individual needs. AI-assisted collaboration allows researchers, organisations and governments to solve problems collectively across geographical boundaries. Properly designed, these capabilities strengthen inclusion and expand participation within society.
However, relationships may also fragment when AI substitutes for authentic human connection rather than supporting it. Excessive dependence upon algorithmic interaction can reduce opportunities for empathy, shared experience and genuine dialogue. Personal identity may become increasingly shaped by algorithmic recommendation systems, while digital echo chambers reinforce existing beliefs and reduce exposure to alternative perspectives. Such dynamics risk weakening social trust and diminishing the shared realities upon which cooperation depends.
AI also raises deeper questions regarding identity itself. As machines increasingly perform tasks once regarded as uniquely human—including reasoning, creativity and communication—individuals and societies are prompted to reconsider what constitutes human uniqueness. This uncertainty may initially produce anxiety or resistance. Yet it also creates an opportunity to rediscover that humanity’s defining characteristics extend beyond intelligence alone to include wisdom, ethical responsibility, compassion, sovereignty and the capacity to embody peace.
From the perspective of Unified Peace Theory, healthy relationships arise not through technological sophistication but through increasing coherence between individuals, communities and the wider human field. AI cannot replace these relationships. It can, however, strengthen or weaken them depending upon whether it is designed to support genuine human connection or merely optimise efficiency.
Consequently, the relational impact of AI reflects less the capabilities of the technology than the quality of the relationships already present within the society deploying it.
6D — Meaning and Interpretation
Artificial Intelligence represents far more than a technological innovation. It has become one of the most significant interpretive technologies ever developed. Unlike earlier machines that primarily extended physical capability, AI increasingly participates in the processes through which humanity generates meaning, constructs knowledge and interprets reality itself.
This shift carries profound implications for peace. Human beings do not respond directly to reality; they respond to their interpretation of reality. Throughout history, many conflicts have emerged not from objective conditions alone but from competing beliefs, identities, narratives and perceptions. AI now increasingly influences how information is gathered, prioritised, interpreted and communicated. In doing so, it becomes part of humanity’s interpretive ecology.
Competing interpretations of AI itself illustrate this phenomenon. Some view AI as humanity’s greatest opportunity for scientific and social advancement. Others regard it as an existential threat capable of undermining civilisation. Still others perceive it primarily through economic, geopolitical, ethical or even spiritual frameworks. These differing interpretations shape public policy, investment, governance and collective behaviour as much as the technology itself.
The deeper question is not which interpretation is entirely correct, but whether humanity can develop sufficient interpretive coherence to engage AI wisely. Fragmented interpretations encourage fear, ideological polarisation and reactive decision-making. Coherent interpretation recognises complexity without collapsing into either technological utopianism or technological catastrophism. It allows uncertainty without abandoning discernment.
Artificial Intelligence also offers an unprecedented opportunity to improve humanity’s own capacity for interpretation. By analysing vast quantities of information, identifying hidden relationships and modelling complex interactions, AI can assist individuals and institutions in recognising patterns that would otherwise remain invisible. Properly governed, it becomes an instrument that expands humanity’s collective capacity for understanding rather than replacing human judgement.
From the perspective of Peace As A Science, this function closely aligns with the role of the Interpreter Dimension. Interpretation determines whether fragmentation is perpetuated or transformed. AI therefore has the potential to strengthen humanity’s interpretive capability by revealing deeper coherence across complex systems, provided that human wisdom remains responsible for assigning meaning and making ethical choices. AI may generate insight, but understanding remains a fundamentally human responsibility.
Accordingly, the greatest interpretive risk posed by AI is not inaccurate computation but the uncritical outsourcing of human meaning-making. The greatest opportunity lies in using AI to enhance humanity’s capacity to perceive coherence without relinquishing sovereignty over interpretation itself.
7D — System Coherence
Viewed from the perspective of the wider human field, Artificial Intelligence should not be understood as an independent force acting upon civilisation. Rather, it functions as an emergent expression of humanity’s current level of coherence. AI reflects the patterns of the civilisation that creates it while simultaneously accelerating those patterns across the wider system.
This creates a feedback relationship between humanity and its technologies. Fragmented societies produce fragmented applications of AI, which in turn amplify fragmentation through misinformation, inequality, surveillance, competitive escalation and institutional instability. Conversely, coherent societies increasingly develop AI systems that strengthen collaboration, scientific discovery, equitable access to knowledge, healthcare, environmental stewardship and collective problem solving. AI therefore acts less as a cause than as a recursive amplifier of the prevailing condition of the human field.
Within Unified Peace Theory, however, system coherence possesses an important characteristic that fundamentally changes this assessment. Coherence is inherently self-stabilising, whereas fragmentation is inherently unstable. Fragmented systems require increasing energy to sustain themselves and progressively reduce their own adaptive capacity. Its capacity to integrate knowledge across disciplines, identify systemic interdependencies, anticipate unintended consequences and support collaborative decision-making enables civilisation to respond to complexity with greater coherence than has previously been possible. Rather than replacing human intelligence, AI becomes a catalyst for expanding humanity’s collective awareness of itself.
The long-term trajectory therefore remains one of increasing coherence. AI may accelerate both fragmentation and adaptation during transitional periods, but fragmentation cannot indefinitely sustain itself. As human institutions become progressively more coherent, AI is likely to evolve from being primarily a productivity technology into one of civilisation’s most significant coherence technologies.
The defining question is therefore not whether Artificial Intelligence will create peace. The defining question is whether humanity will develop sufficient coherence to steward Artificial Intelligence as an instrument that consciously participates in the inevitable emergence of a more peaceful civilisation.
Assessment of the 12 Peace Stabilisers
The 12 Peace Stabilisers are the foundational conditions that Unified Peace Theory identifies as supporting healthy, resilient and peaceful human systems: Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness, Forgiveness, Unity, Discipline, Faith, Responsibility, Love, Wholeness, Joy and Peace.
The assessment indicates that Artificial Intelligence neither strengthens nor weakens these stabilisers independently. Rather, AI amplifies the condition of the stabilisers already present within the human systems that create, govern and apply it. This makes the health of the stabilisers one of the most significant determinants of whether AI functions as peace infrastructure or as an accelerator of fragmentation.
Several stabilisers emerge as particularly significant.
Honesty is increasingly challenged within AI-enabled information environments. The capacity to generate convincing synthetic media, automated misinformation and persuasive digital content places unprecedented pressure on society’s ability to distinguish truth from manipulation. At the same time, AI also possesses remarkable capacity to improve transparency by identifying corruption, detecting fraud, exposing hidden systemic relationships and making complex information more accessible. Whether honesty strengthens or weakens therefore depends less upon AI itself than upon the integrity of those directing its application.
Open-mindedness becomes essential as societies navigate rapid technological change. Fragmented responses frequently polarise into technological optimism or technological fear, reducing the capacity for balanced judgement. Coherent systems remain willing to learn, adapt and revise their understanding as new evidence emerges. AI itself can support this stabiliser by expanding access to knowledge and facilitating interdisciplinary learning, provided curiosity remains stronger than ideology.
Responsibility emerges as perhaps the defining stabiliser for the AI era. Artificial Intelligence increasingly influences decisions affecting healthcare, education, justice, finance, employment and security. As AI systems become more capable, the temptation to transfer responsibility from human judgement to algorithmic decision-making also increases. Such a transfer would represent a significant fragmentation of human sovereignty. Coherent systems recognise that while AI may inform decisions, responsibility for those decisions remains fundamentally human.
Discipline is equally critical. The pace of AI development continues to exceed the evolution of governance, legislation and institutional adaptation. Disciplined societies invest in robust safety frameworks, transparent regulation, ongoing evaluation and long-term stewardship rather than pursuing capability for its own sake. Without sufficient discipline, technological advancement risks outpacing humanity’s capacity to guide it wisely.
Unity is under simultaneous pressure and opportunity. AI has extraordinary potential to democratise knowledge, reduce barriers to education, facilitate global collaboration and strengthen international scientific cooperation. Yet unequal access to computational resources, data and technological infrastructure may also deepen divisions between nations, institutions and communities. Whether AI contributes to unity depends upon whether its benefits are distributed in ways that strengthen the collective wellbeing of humanity rather than concentrating advantage within relatively few centres of power.
The remaining stabilisers—Willingness, Forgiveness, Faith, Love, Wholeness, Joy and Peace—represent qualities that remain fundamentally human. AI may create conditions that support their expression, but it cannot embody them on humanity’s behalf. These stabilisers arise through conscious human development rather than computational capability. Indeed, the emergence of increasingly capable AI may heighten their importance by reminding humanity that peaceful civilisation depends not only upon intelligence but also upon wisdom, compassion, ethical maturity and the capacity to maintain coherence amidst accelerating complexity.
Taken together, the assessment indicates that the Twelve Peace Stabilisers remain generally intact but are under increasing pressure as AI transforms the speed, scale and complexity of human systems. This does not indicate systemic failure. Rather, it reflects a civilisation undergoing rapid evolutionary transition.
The principal diagnostic finding is therefore one of Prevention. Humanity currently possesses an opportunity to strengthen the stabilisers before fragmentation becomes more deeply embedded within emerging AI ecosystems. Investment in ethical governance, education, transparency, international cooperation and human-centred design represents preventative peace-building rather than reactive crisis management.
A secondary priority is Maintenance. Existing examples of coherent AI deployment—particularly within healthcare, scientific research, education, accessibility and environmental management—demonstrate how AI can already strengthen peaceful human systems. Preserving and expanding these applications will reinforce the coherence already emerging across many sectors of society.
Finally, targeted Intervention remains necessary wherever AI is applied within environments characterised by misinformation, exploitation, autonomous violence, systemic inequality or the erosion of human sovereignty. These represent points where fragmentation may otherwise be amplified faster than institutions can adapt.
Overall, the diagnostic assessment indicates that Artificial Intelligence does not diminish the relevance of the Twelve Peace Stabilisers. Rather, it elevates them. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into human civilisation, the stabilisers become even more important because they determine whether expanding intelligence is guided by expanding wisdom. In this sense, the future of AI is inseparable from the future coherence of humanity itself.
Scientific Correlations
The observations emerging from this assessment demonstrate strong convergence with several established scientific disciplines. Rather than existing independently, these disciplines increasingly describe complementary aspects of the same underlying phenomenon: the emergence of coherence within complex adaptive systems. At the same time, network science demonstrates how misinformation, polarisation and cascading failures can spread rapidly through highly connected systems. The relationship between AI and Neuroscience extends beyond individual cognition into collective intelligence. Artificial Intelligence does not replace these evolutionary dynamics; rather, it accelerates humanity’s ability to consciously participate within them.
From the perspective of Information Theory, AI substantially increases humanity’s capacity to process information. Yet information alone does not produce peace.
